Rock Financial is committed to making a difference in the region
United Way has been working very closely with Rock Financial, a Quicken Loans company, to engage the corporation in making a lasting impact in our community. On Oct. 21 and 22, approximately 40 employees will build two wheelchair ramps through United Way’s Ray West Memorial Ramp Project. These ramps will make a lasting impact on two Detroit residents by providing easier access to and from their homes. The ramps foster a sense of independence and mobility that these individuals aren’t currently able to enjoy. The ramp project is only successful through sponsors and volunteers and by sponsoring both the materials needed to construct the ramp as well as the volunteers; Rock Financial is helping two more individuals in our community lead independent lives.

The company is also a valued sponsor of the upcoming Southeast Michigan Employment, Training & Resource Expo, Oct. 11. The event is hosted by United Way and a collection of public and private organizations, and will match job seekers with available jobs and resources to overcome barriers to employment. Also, the company is engaging new employees in United Way through its quarterly employee orientation and providing a permanent link on the Intranet to United Way’s E-way campaign, enabling individuals to make online donations throughout the year.

Management and organized labor work together to make an impact
From business to nonprofits to politics, competition is everywhere. United Way is one of the places in community where that “versus” becomes “and”. Our partners may often compete fiercely in the business world, but come together around the table to improve our community. Recently, this sense of “versus” not “and” was taken to new heights when management and labor representatives from the Detroit Newspaper Partnership, Detroit Free Press, and The Detroit News, sat together to determine how they can best work together to improve community conditions. The newly strengthened partnership is committed to making a difference through United Way. Campaigns are underway from management and extending into the DNP’s branches and plants throughout the region. United Way looks forward to the results of this newly focused and expanded effort, both in dollars and further community collaboration.

R. L. Polk surpasses last year’s effort
R. L. Polk & Co. recently ended their annual campaign, reporting an increase from last year’s total. Their total employee campaign and corporate gift is $235,750, an increase of more than $30,000 from last year’s effort. R. L. Polk & Co. has supported United Way for over 50 years. Polk believes it is important to support the communities in which it operates and the industries it serves through charitable donations and event sponsorships. The organization also encourages volunteerism because it is their belief that in doing so, volunteering strengthens and enhances our communities and ourselves.

In her 10th year as R. L. Polk’s Employee Campaign Chairperson, communications specialist Judy Magdalenic has this to say about the organization’s partnership with United Way: “I have been an R. L. Polk & Co. employee for 29 years and have contributed to United Way every year since I began working for the company. I’ve served on several United Way committees and toured United Way partner agencies, and I truly believe in what they do. I am proud to help those in need through my organization’s company campaign and by volunteering my time outside of the workplace.”
